In a stakeholder validation workshop held on 27 April 2023, Uganda’s Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) presented the mini-grid technical standards developed in partnership with GET.transform. The attending stakeholders included government, development partners, utilities and mini-grid developers.
In the past, most licensed mini-grid projects were required to comply with national grid standards. This proved to be costly as it significantly added to the capital and operational expenditure of mini-grid projects.
With GET.transform’s support, ERA has now developed technical standards specifically tailored to mini-grids. They operationalise existing regulations while improving quality of service and providing a framework for integration to the main grid. The new standards also prescribe guidelines for engineering, procurement and construction.
The workshop successfully delivered on the objectives as constructive feedback was obtained from the stakeholders. This will now be used to refine the set of standards to be disseminated to the public in the coming weeks.
