End of February, the African Forum for Utility Regulators (AFUR) hosted a technical workshop in partnership with GET.transform. The 3-day workshop gathered regulators from AFUR’s Project Steering Committee in Kampala, Uganda to jointly review the African Model Mini-Grid Regulations AFUR is currently preparing in collaboration with GET.transform.
The regulation templates and guidelines were presented to regulator representatives from Burkina Faso, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The regulators then broke into different groups to take in-depth looks at different business models under the regulation and provide feedback. Countries also embarked on individual sessions to explore if and how they may implement the tool, and what could be the related roadmap and timeline.
The topic was further brought to life by a site visit to a solar mini-grid and a peer exchange at the premises of the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).
At the end of the fruitful workshop, the working group gave its approval for the model mini-grid regulations to enter the process of full Project Steering Committee approval. Once these final peer reviews are in, AFUR will be able to roll-out the toolbox.
