The Power Forum 2024 centered around the theme “The Evolving Ugandan Energy Sector”, and highlighted the challenges and opportunities in shaping a sustainable and efficient future with key stakeholders, policymakers, and experts in attendance. This event was organised by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) in partnership with GET.transform.

The key sessions explored regional power trading, e.g. by analysing regulatory hurdles as well as innovative models for trans-boundary power projects.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) emphasised the importance of ensuring energy security through enhanced generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure to meet Uganda’s growing energy demands. The Ministry also reiterated Uganda’s commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources, particularly through hydropower, solar, and wind energy, in line with global climate action goals. A spotlight was also put on the job creation potential of energy projects, particularly in construction, maintenance, and clean energy sectors.

The forum discussed various innovative financing mechanisms to support sustainable energy projects, including green financing, concessional loans, and climate-focused funds. Expanding rural electrification was identified as a key priority, with plans to enhance off-grid solutions, and mini-grid developments to connect remote areas to reliable power sources.
