GET.transform provided insights to the “AREI Knowledge and Experience Sharing Platform”, hosted by the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI) with support from the European Commission. The event, which also built on expert inputs from the EU Global Technical Assistance Facility for Sustainable Energy and the Africa-EU Energy Partnership, aimed at enhancing regional dialogue on renewable energy among energy ministry officials and regulators.
Drawing on GET.transform’s partnerships with African regulators and relationships within the off-grid electricity access networks, the team presented on the development of legal and regulatory frameworks that enable the acceleration of rural electrification. GET.transform’s case studies on Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Nigeria and Senegal provided food for thought on common challenges, such as electrification master planning and financial regulation.
Picking up on the interests of the audience, it appears that the levelised cost of electricity (production cost) in relation to the consumer tariffs remain an issue of utmost concern for decentralised distribution business models in various countries. GET.transform is analysing this issue and developing solutions and regulatory tools as part of an ongoing Mini-Grid Regulatory Toolbox.
