The Continental Power Systems Master Plan (CMP) process has reached another key milestone. At the recent African Union (AU) Summit, the CMP and the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) were endorsed as Flagship Projects of Agenda 2063. The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) is leading the development of the CMP and hosted a two-day stakeholder workshop right after the AU Summit to align with African Power Pools and other CMP stakeholders.
The CMP serves as the foundation for the AfSEM and is essential for addressing Africa’s energy issues. It connects generation and transmission strategies within and across regional power pools and AU Member States to pinpoint critical energy infrastructure needs in Africa.
GET.transform is proud to be among the chosen partners supporting the CMP process and was present at the meeting. The technical assistance provider has contributed to core elements by means of a specific support study on Africa’s solar energy potential, through transmission planning trainings. GET.transform also reviewed the report on network studies which assesses the in-country backbone transmission networks and cross-border interconnectors that will form part in the African Power System expansion until 2040.
With GET.transform’s focus on the power sector and Africa, further activities of the programme equally help advance the CMP and AfSEM by unlocking cross-regional electricity trading and new economic and financial opportunities. In Namibia, GET.transform worked with the Electricity Control Board, NamPower and the Southern African Power Pool on joint guidance for national and regional power markets. Later this year, a new publication and training programme will build capacity on effective renewable energy tendering.
GET.transform remains committed to supporting the CMP in close collaboration with AUDA-NEPAD, further stakeholders and partners. Future activities entail master plan updates, grid code revisions and the supported operationalisation of further electricity markets. Working together across the regulatory, technical and financial dimension will provide the best opportunities to replicate best practices or find innovative solutions where they are needed to let Africa become the global powerhouse it aspires to be.
