Mozambique is making further headway on its distributed generation journey. On 29 February, energy sector stakeholders including the Energy Ministry (MIREME), the regulator ARENE, the public utility EDM and private sector representatives came together for the launch of a white paper and roadmap on distributed generation (DG) in Mozambique. The event which marks the second session of the National DG Working Group was organised by GET.transform in collaboration with GET.invest and in partnership with the two renewable energy associations ALER and AMER.

The white paper and roadmap provide a blueprint for expanding distributed renewable energy (RE) generation in Mozambique. The documents pinpoint opportunities to scale viable renewable energy generation for own consumption and equally injection of electricity surplus into the national grid.

GET.transform is proud to be among Mozambique’s chosen partners to explore and prepare for the country’s DG potential. Together with its sister programme GET.invest, GET.transform began to work with the Mozambican energy sector on DG in 2022 and held several trainings, collected stakeholder input and facilitated the constitution of the first National Working Group on RE integration topics.

The DG potential is critical for Mozambique’s goal to increase the share of variable RE in the power system as described in the New Electricity Law 2022 and the recently launched Just Energy Transition Strategy.

The work on unlocking the DG potential continues this week with a technical workshop hosted by Sustainable Energy Africa in partnership with GET.transform’s Policy Catalyst which welcomes next to Mozambican representatives, utilities and regulators from Uganda, Namibia, Lesotho and Eswatini.

The white paper and roadmap will be published later this year.
