The Mozambican Energy Regulatory Authority (ARENE) has extended the partnership with GET.transform on the development of off-grid regulatory instruments. Previously, GET.transform provided support on the development of the national mini-grid tariff framework and main-grid arrival regulation. Now the partners are establishing an auction mechanism through which mini-grid developers will be selected for the award of an electricity distribution concession.
In 2020, a number of donors expressed interest to open financing windows for mini-grids in Mozambique, in order to accelerate the electrification of the country’s large rural population. The UK, Sweden and now Germany have announced funding for mini-grids to be developed by the private sector. As a technical assistance provider, GET.transform works with the regulator and other energy sector agencies, to ensure an enabling framework that can process projects, and de-risk the substantial investments expected to flow into the energy access space.
