The second Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Regional Forum of Regulators took place during the OLADE Energy Week in Asunción, Paraguay. This event was organised in close collaboration between the Latin American Energy Organisation (OLADE), the Ibero-American Association of Energy Regulatory Entities (ARIAE), and GET.transform.
The Regulators’ Forum provides a platform for regional energy regulators to share best practices, address challenges, and discuss key issues within the regulatory landscape, with a particular focus on the adoption of renewable energy and regional electricity integration. To deepen knowledge and understanding, GET.transform presented a research project titled “Electricity Regulation for Future Energy Markets in LAC”. The study offers an analysis of energy regulation in three countries across the region, benchmarks these against three advanced energy markets—Texas, Spain, and Italy—and presents conclusions and recommendations for a regulatory roadmap to support the energy transition in LAC. The roadmap emphasises the integration of renewable energies and harmonisation of energy systems within the region.
In another panel discussion, energy regulators from the region explored how market mechanisms can create the necessary environment to support low-emission generation technologies. The panel was moderated by the Senior Energy Specialist of the Inter-American Development Bank in Lima, Peru, with the participation of representatives from the regulatory authorities of Cuba, Bolivia, Chile, and the Central American Energy Market Commission (CRIE).
Building on the exchanges, the Regulators’ Forum will continue working towards enhanced regional energy cooperation. The study is expected to be published by the end of the year.
